Neandertaler, Gallier und Johanna von Orleans
Nach den Neandertalern haben auch die Gallier hier erkennbare Spuren hinterlassen.
Aber wirklich aufblühen wird die Stadt durch den Bau einer Brücke über die Loire im 12. Jahrhundert. Sie hat ihre schöne Devise behalten: „Manibus date lilia plenis“, was man mit: „Verteilt Blumen mit vollen Händen!" übersetzen könnte.
Die Stadt wurde von den Engländern eingenommen und später von Johanna von Orleans befreit. Hier fanden mehrere Konzile zu den ehelichen Streitigkeiten und Wirrungen der französischen Könige im Mittelalter statt. Heute geht es allerdings wesentlich friedlicher zu. Sie wird in der Liste der „schönsten Umwege Frankreichs“ geführt.
